Considering leaving the US for good? Here’s what to think about before you move abroad

"(CNN) — Some Americans dream of leaving the United States for a new life overseas — an idea that always generates renewed interest at the start of a new presidential administration.

However, relocation experts and seasoned expats emphasize that an international move is an enormous, life-altering decision that — as exhilarating and fulfilling as it may turn out to be — requires vast amounts of perseverance, preparation and soul-searching.

They also strongly advise people thinking about leaving the US for good to consider a wide range of factors beyond the political climate at home.

The day-to-day reality of navigating life in an unfamiliar culture can be a stark contrast from the shiny, smiley images on social media, whether they’re showcasing digital nomad families, new owners of old houses in Italy or Francophiles who fulfilled a dream of moving to Paris.

While it’s far from a mass exodus, the number of Americans who live outside the US is not insignificant. Exact figures vary across organizations and agencies, but one often-cited number comes from Washington, DC-based nonprofit American Citizens Abroad, which estimates there are currently about six million US citizens living abroad."
