The Social Security Fairness Act passed the Senate in a 76 to 20 vote
The Social Security Fairness Act, which will eliminate Social Security provisions known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pensions Offset (GPO), was passed by the Senate late on December 20, 2024. WEP reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who are receiving pension and disability benefits from employment where they did not pay Social Security payroll taxes. Teachers, firefighters and many other state and local workers as well as individuals receiving foreign pension benefits, have been affected by the WEP reduction in Social Security benefits for decades. It is estimated that both provisions (WEP and GPO) affect an estimated 3 million individuals.
The bill will now go to the President's desk to be signed into law. ACA is pleased to have advocated for this legislation alongside other organizations representing the individuals affected by these provisions. ACA has long heard from members and supporters who have been negatively affected by the WEP provision and it has long been a platform issue of the organization. ACA thanks all its members and supporters for participation in our advocacy campaigns that helped get messaging into Congressional offices on the importance of passing the Social Security Fairness Act. Thank you!
