ACA contributions to GAO report on FATCA important in highlighting issues for Americans overseas
ACA was asked to contribute the the US Government Accountability Offices’s (GAO) report on the implementation of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and its effects on US persons living overseas. A link to the report can be found here: https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-19-180?utm_source=onepager&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=email_%20si
Important summary conclusions were that close to 75% of taxpayers reporting foreign assets to the IRS also reported them separately to Treasury—indicating potential unnecessary duplication and that some Americans living abroad can't get services from foreign banks that find the law too burdensome.
