American Citizens Abroad (ACA) looks forward to working with the Americans Abroad Caucus in the 117th Congress.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney recently announced the registration of the Americans Abroad Caucus in the 117th Congress.  Representatives María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Dina Titus (D-NV) join Congresswoman Maloney as co-chairs of this important representative body.  Created in the 110th Congress, the Americans Abroad Caucus has advocated on a variety of issues related to Americans living and working overseas, Americans Abroad Caucus | Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (house.gov)

Congresswoman Maloney, Congresswoman Salazar and Congresswoman Titus, are aware of the issues facing the 6 to 9 million Americans overseas; taxation, voting, immigration and others, having many overseas Americans in their constituencies.  In the press release issued by Congresswoman Maloney’s office, they note the importance of the Caucus and its role in representing the community of Americans living and working overseas.

With the announcement of the Caucus, Congresswoman Maloney also reintroduced two pieces of legislation, the Overseas Americans Financial Access Act and the Commission on Americans Living Overseas Act.  Both of these legislative efforts reflect positions that ACA advocates for.  The Overseas Americans Financial Access Act is similar to ACA’s proposal for Same Country Exemption.  The Commission on Americans Living Abroad Act, by instituting an examination of a wide range of issues, including Citizenship-Based Taxation versus Residence-Based Taxation, would complement hearings which ACA has long advocated for and continues to call on Congress to hold Write to Your Representatives in Congress | Washington, DC | (americansabroad.org).

“Having the support of the Americans Abroad Caucus is key because their efforts complement ACA’s advocacy here in Washington, DC.  The growing size and importance of the Americans Abroad Caucus is proof that the issues facing Americans overseas are getting more exposure and focus on Capitol Hill,” said ACA Executive Director, Marylouise Serrato.

The Caucus also issued a letter requesting that the Biden Administration and the US State Department prioritize vaccinating Americans abroad against COVID-19, Vaccines For Americans Abroad Final.pdf (house.gov).  The Caucus letter adds its voice to the growing call from other House and Senate offices for the Congress and Administration to address the issue of vaccination of Americans overseas.

“ACA is pleased to see the reinstitution of the Americans Abroad Caucus in the 117th Congress.  The Caucus is an important voice for the community of Americans living and working overseas.  With the introduction of the two pieces of legislation, the Caucus is demonstrating that they understand the tax and compliance issues the community faces and want to work towards implementable solutions,” said Jonathan Lachowitz, ACA Chairman.
